O.K. So I’m not really engaged but my dad is. News I found out via an email, subject line: I’m Engaged. I was going online to upload our team’s financial spreadsheet for the month and wasn’t planning on looking at any personal emails since the Internet attempts to load one page per 20 minutes (I will never take fast Internet for granted again!). But how can you not open an email from your dad that has I’m Engaged in the subject line?
My parents have been divorced since I was in third grade, neither one of them remarrying, so the idea of my dad getting remarried after so many years, shocked me. All I could do was stare at the screen and then eventually close the computer, the Internet no longer working.
It is weird getting such big news when you are in the middle of nowhere Africa where there is no way of communicating back home. I have only been able to speak with my parents once in the past two months since our Internet has been so horrible and we have no phones, so attempting to call was never an option. So when I got the news of my dad’s engagement all I could do was make the 30-minute walk back home and ponder this new development.
So, I guess I’m still pondering. In a way it is another piece of my childhood I am shedding away. My sister and I will no longer be the central women in our dad’s life and while it will take some adjusting, I’m ok with that. While it has begun to sink in that my dad will once again be married after 15 years, it probably won’t fully hit me until I finally step back onto American soil 6 months from. But for now, Congratulations to Sandy and my dad!
P.S. This month we got to go on an amazing African Safari and saw a ton of animals…
