I bet Professor Arnold never would have imagined that skills I learned in his professional public speaking class would be used to preach in an African church. When asked to do a sermon to the businessmen and women of the church, I was excited and figured if I could survive public speaking in grad school I could speak to a group of African businessmen.

Pastor Victoria had suggested I give them advice on how to make their businesses more profitable but after praying about it I felt the Lord leading me in a completely different direction….

I have noticed that a lot of the congregation looks to God to make them more money or bless them with a car. Pastor Victoria has told us that many times after their prayers are answered they stop coming to church all together.

Having a relationship with Christ is so much more than earthly blessings. He challenges us to live with a different perspective on money.

SO I decided to challenge the congregation with three main questions, questions that continue to challenge me:

Are you successful from God’s point of view or the worlds?

 Do your possessions posses you?

Are you a slave to money?

The bible gives us a lot of information to help ourselves answer these questions and each verse challenges everyone living in a society that is obsessed with consumption and wealth.

Matthew 6:24 You cannot serve both God and money."

1 Timothy 6:10 "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many grief’s."

Hebrews 13:5 Keep your life free from love of money and be content with what you have

Matthew 19:16-22 (the story of the rich young man)
Go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me

On this black Friday weekend where so many people are focused on the consumption aspect of Christmas, I pray that people will begin to slow down and look at how Jesus would want us to celebrate.
