I recommend reading A Tale of Three Kings by Gene Edwards.  It’s a short and easy read about authority and brokenness.  Below are some quotes I took while reading the book.  It is a story breaking down the roles of Saul, David and Absalom.

God has people who claim to have God’s authority but don’t, who claim to be broken but are not, and many others in between.

Remember brokenness and submission require pain and suffering.

David fled from Saul alone.  He was not aiming to bring division.

Suffering was giving birth.  Humility was being born.

By earthly measures he was a shattered man; by heavens measure, a broken one.

Better he kill me than I learn his ways.  Better he kill me than I become as he is.  I shall not practice the way that cause kings to go mad.  I wil not throw spears, nor will I allow hatred to grow in my heart.  I will not avenge.  I will not destroy the Lord’s anointed.  Not now.  Not ever! (David about Saul)

David showed submission, not authority.

He taught me not the quick cure of rules and laws, but the art of patience.

Legalism is nothing but a leaders way of avoiding suffering.

How sure are you that God is with you all the time?

I seek His will not His power.

The motives of man’s heart will eventually be revealed.
