Yup, it’s true, my head is completely infested with lice. It’s not your typical World Race lice infestation either. Typically you know that lice are around so you check on a normal basis and there may be 5-6 bugs at most. I, however, had no clue that I was capable of having lice, so for a whole month now, these little bugs have been breeding in my hair. Today we picked out at least 100 bugs. That’s a LOT of bugs!!
Since we found them last night, all I can think is, “Oh my gosh, I have bugs crawling around in my hair! GROSS!” My teammates have been amazing, sitting around picking the lice out of my hair for hours, reminding me that they’ve all had lice multiple times in the last few months, telling me I’m not gross…”This is the World Race.”
That quote has begun to mean so much over the last few months. The World Race is so much more than just a mission trip to 11 countries for 11 months. It’s bucket baths in freezing cold water (if you’re lucky to have a bath at all), wearing the same outfit for weeks straight, looking at your feet and knowing they aren’t really that tan, they are just that dirty, picking up children not wearing underwear and not thinking anything of it, being stared at and hollered at all day every day. The World Race is not bathing for a week and no one caring because they haven’t bathed either, not shaving for a month, drinking water that tastes like smoke because it was boiled in some nasty pot so that it wouldn’t have parasites, eating off dishes “cleaned” with left hands that are also used to “wipe down” other things, sleeping on cement floors, living in a room smaller than my room at home with 6 other people, having absolutely NO where to go to be alone and squatting to go to the bathroom.
The World Race is dropping ALL comforts and privacy. The beautiful thing is that the World Race is a time to drop all this and pick up the humility and love of Christ and share it with others.
The World Race is preaching to 30 villagers at a time the gospel, speaking at churches daily and encouraging the 20 believers of a community, going door-to-door to pray the prayer of salvation with people, seeing a woman who had pains in her arms and legs move them freely because of the power of God, hearing children sing that their God is SO big!, hiking mountains to visit the most secluded people, holding children and kissing all over them to show them how much Jesus really loves them, sitting in a basement with a young oppressed woman and singing about how amazing our God is!
The World Race is living a life similar to Christ’s.
