Whether it is a marriage, a prom, or a birth the all important #hashtag is not far behind. In preparing for the race, I flippantly joked with my friends about what a fun hashtag would be. There were many possibilities.
#bestwaytoterrifyyourfather
#parasitesbugsandwildlifeohmy
#waitwhereisshegoing
#isthatevenarealplace
Yes, hashtags are funny, and they can be clever, but I also believe they can be profound and full of meaning. I started to prayerfully consider what this trip meant to me. I started to think about what the Lord was going to do in me and through me in this year that I dedicated to Him. Movement was at the forefront of all of those thoughts. As I started to think through all of this, the Lord gave me one word, migration.
So, dutiful English major that I am, I immediately looked up the definition. To save you the trouble, here it is:
Migration is the movement by people from one place to another with the intentions of settling temporarily or permanently in the new location. The movement is often over long distances and from one country to another. Migration may be individuals, family units or in large groups.
I don’t think there is a better word in existence for what the next year of my life will look like. I will be moving from one country to the next, settling there temporarily. I would say that my squad would definitely qualify as a large group, and the planes, buses, cars, bikes, and tuk-tuks will carry me further from home than I have ever been. I look forward to the day when I can call those people going with me on the journey my family. Come August, I will officially be migrant. While that fits me and what I’m doing so well, the first four words are even better.
Migration is the movement. I would add that my migration is the movement of the kingdom. More than anything, this whole thing is about making the name of the Lord known among the nations. This year of my life is a movement of the gospel. It’s a movement of grace. It’s a movement of love. It’s a movement of forgiveness. It’s a movement of healing. It’s a movement of truth. It’s a movement of Jesus. I recently listened to a sermon by Carl Lentz. One line stuck out to me. He said, “Tell someone your dream. If they don’t laugh in your face then start over. Go back to the drawing board and dream bigger.” My dream should be so unbelievable that the only way it could ever happen would be through the power of God. So I am committed to #dreamingbig. Feel free to laugh in the face of my dreams because my response will always be thank you. Thank you for reminding me how much greater the Lord is and what he can accomplish.
And so without further gilding the lily and with no more ado, here is my #hashtag.
