From November 7th-9th, The Lighthouse hosted a Typhoon Yolanda commemoration ceremony and celebration. It all started off with a dedication of the building. About 50 people joined hands, encircling the house in prayer. Later that evening, a huge family supper was held for KIM staff, first responders, and the neighbourhood council. Plaques were also presented to those who were first on the scene, honouring them for the incredible bravery needed to bring aid during such a bleak time. Saturday morning started bright and early with a sunrise service on the beach. The typhoon hit shortly after five in the morning and hearing the worship and joy all around only a year later was an excellent reminder of how sometimes storms do come, but ultimately nothing can hinder God’s faithfulness and presence in our lives. Mid-morning, a few teams were sent out to distribute water and food to people mourning at the mass graves as well as pray with those who needed comfort. The house was an extremely busy place that evening, as over one thousand people showed up for the carnival and supper! There was face painting, balloon animals, ice cream, and tons more. A few memorial trees were planted, the Wall of Remembrance was revealed (painted by members of our squad), and a candlelight vigil was held as hundreds of sky lanterns were released. The evening concluded with a prayer and worship service, fireworks, and of course an epic dance party. Sunday was taken over with the first (hopefully annual?) Yolanda Memorial Basketball Tournament. Many people came from the neighbourhood to participate and it was amusing watching the KIM teams take on the locals! Overall, it was a weekend which exceeded our expectations tenfold. Many relationships were built and strengthened and the healing that took place was so encouraging. God never leaves us. He always loves, always perseveres and is always present, even in the hard times.
