Team changes that is. Half of the teams on our squad got switched around and our team was one of them. I loved all of my teammates on Horizon, but last month wasn’t without a lot of difficulties and up and downs. I think we all were both blessed by being on a team together and blessed by the team changes. So, without further ado, I’m pleased to announce my new team, team Doulos!

There are a couple of familiar faces – Ashley and Jacquie from my last team (it looks like Jacquie and I are going to be blessed by being stuck together for the entire race!) and Kate Nixon and Karen Kurtenbach. That’s right! Back to an all girls team. And only 5 of us. I really, really excited about this team!!!

Wandering what our name means? Doulos is a Greek word for slave/servant. Which doesn’t sound all that appealing, I know, bare with me. James, the half brother of Jesus, uses this word in the opening verse of his book. James introduces himself as a servant of the Lord Jesus Christ. ‘Doulos’ is the word translated ‘servant’ here. So we have the half brother of Jesus, a man who grew up with Jesus, saying here that he is a servant and slave to Jesus. It’s a really beautiful description when we learn what a doulos slave was. A doulos was someone whom of their own free will, chose to bind themselves and serve a particular house and family. It was saying “Hey, I love you and I choose to serve you for the rest of my life.” This was a binding oath and commitment. As a symbol they would pierce their ear on the door post of the house and put and earring to show their commitment. We skipped the ear piercing part, but we agreed as a team that we choose to be servants as Jesus was a servant, choose to be slaves of God of our own free will because His love is better than life and better is one day in His house than thousands elsewhere! We are DOULOS!!!
