Last I saw her she was in a pretty light blue dress with a dirty pink sweater. Her eyes have a sort of twinkle in them; she’s not difficult to love.  When she saw me on the second day of ministry, she approached so painfully shy, as if almost to ask whether or not I remembered her. I looked at her with the biggest smile that said, “How could I forget?” You could only imagine my joy when in return the biggest smile spread across her face as she ran into my arms and fell into my lap.

She sat on me and I held her close as the kids played around us. She was dirty and had a cough, I wondered who was taking care of this sweet girl, if anyone. I myself have been feeling sick these past few days- extremely fatigued, dizzy, nauseated, but having met Evonne has made everything worth it.

Evonne is one of the children at Tafara, a ministry here in Mutare that serves a lunch meal Monday through Friday each week. Children from all over the community walk, often barefoot, to Tafara to get a meal and enjoy a few hours of fun before the sun goes down.

My team, redeeming D.U.S.T., as well as team Ignite, have been doing ministry together this month, carrying the privilege of helping make their food, playing with them, and serving their lunch meal.

This is my life. This is Africa.
It’s crazy.
