When I went to youth group growing up I never went because I cared about Jesus. I went because I cared about having friends. I went because I was willing to sit through some silly teaching so I could spend time with my friends. I can't speak for every one, but all of the of youth groups I've been to in the States are attended by kids that care about playing games, maybe getting some free food and then paying for it all by listening to someone talk or watching a cool movie about feeling like a Christian.

When we arrived at our ministry, we made it just in time for youth group that night. I remember being taken back by a lot of things. The lights were low, no games, no food, no hang out time. Every person was singing during worship, and many stayed after to worship more. For the most part, everyone payed close attention during the lesson. There were youth praying over their friends. I can't remember a youth group night in my past where everyone was singing, especially the guys, or where anyone cared enough to pray for others without being prompted. It was like they really cared about God, and each other and our ministry contacts.

As I've gotten to know the youth better, I know that these people are far from saints. They still get yelled at not to talk when they shouldn't. They still create drama and falter in love and deal with deep seated issues. They are just like youth everywhere in the world. But I can tell God is doing something really great here. I've heard where they have come from, I can see the communities they live in, and none of them would be where they are if it weren't for God. And I love what God is doing in their lives and the examples He is molding them into for their community and for us.
