Worship is a huge passion of mine.

I love to sing, dance, and lift praise to my Father. However worship in modern day society has become lyrics, hand movements, the exact way you lift your head to the sky, and the motions that you go through to get the ‘feelings’ you want out of ‘worship.’

But that’s not worship. Worship isn’t a selfish make me feel good time. Worship is a time where you break your heart into a million pieces and hand them to your Father. Where you cry out to your Father in prayer for him to hear the things you want to proclaim to him. Worship is about Him and only Him.

Sadly I have seen worship become the same ole song and dance. Matthew West says it best in his song, Motions.

This might hurt, it’s not safe

But I know that I’ve gotta make a change

I don’t care if I break

At least I’ll be feeling something

‘Cause just okay is not enough

Help me fight through the nothingness of life

I don’t wanna go through the motions

I don’t wanna go one more day

Without Your all consuming passion inside of me

I don’t wanna spend my whole life asking

What if I had given everything

Instead of going through the motions?

Do you understand the depth to the words that are in this song? When singing this you are asking to be broken, to feel pain, to walk into a battlefield where the outcome looks like defeat. You are choosing to not give a simple, “I’m okay” answer to the simple question “How you are?” You are declaring that you are going to put all of your effort into a relationship with Christ.

Jesus you can get for free but Christ will cost you everything.

I know for a fact I do not want to go about this race in the same ole song and dance. To raise my hands and “act the part” to “proclaim all is okay” to “not show vulnerability’ and to “not press into the hard stuff.”

Ask yourself:

What are you willing to give up to do the call that God is calling you into?

What is your relationship with Christ worth to you?

Are you willing to not have kids because God is calling you into a life of singleness? Are you willing to go to jail and get beat each and every day because you proclaim the name of Jesus? Are you willing to watch thousands of babies die because you are meant to provide and only have resources for only a few hundred of them? Are you willing to be homeless? Are you willing to watch your family die and you cannot be there for their funeral? Are you willing to go to the depths of despair, brokenness, pain, and suffering for your God?

Trust me. This scares the crap out of me. And it should you as well.

Jesus you can get for free, but Christ will cost you everything.
