During this time of transition, I've been able to do random stuff including some temp jobs and going to a few acting auditions. First, I need to preface that I am by no means an expert or well experienced in this industry. I am merely a student trying to ever so slightly break in. (So if you happen to be a legit casting director, feel free to contact me if I'm what you're looking for. ::wink::) Although I am far from being a Hollywood star, there are some things I have learned about the industry and about myself that I found can be useful in the other areas of my life. I thought I share them with you so you too can get a glimpse into this world.. enjoy!
– Being honest with yourself
Unfortunately, in this industry, there is a lot stereotyping.. that's just the way it is. A mere glance at your photo and you're already type casted. You can have the best acting talent, but if you're a 4'11" skinny looking teenager, chances are you're not going to get an action packed role that they're looking for the next Vin Diesel.
God made you YOU. From the way you look to your talents and personalities. But you have to be honest with yourself, are you trying to be something you're just not? It's one thing to try to improve yourself, but it's another thing to get plastic surgery for something you don't need. You get my drift. Also, are you who you think you are?
Other things to consider: Look through the eyes of your spouse… What is it like to be married to me?
– Rejection… it's not personal!
For the majority of those who are not born into Hollywood royalty (and even if they were) and are looking to get into the industry, you go to a ton of auditions… like A TON. Sometimes you get a callback and most times, it's just silence. But it's ok… no need to take it personally, it's just business.
Consider: Does rejection hit you really hard? Where does your identity truly lie in?
– Know your boundaries
This industry can take you down paths that can easily compromise your values. Know what your boundaries and stick to them! Which leads to….
– Who do you want to be known for or do you just want to be known?
Going back to the being honest with yourself, why do you really want to get into the acting/modeling industry? Some just want attention, but others want to share their talents with others.
Consider: In your job, do you long to be important or impactful?
– Be intentional, work hard, and be free to follow your dreams
It takes a lot of work to make this into a career and it takes a lot of "hurry up and wait." But you make it what you want it to be. So work hard and follow your dreams, but remember the One who gave you your the gifts and talents.
Consider: Are you following the dream more than the Dream Giver?
Whatever industry you are in, go ahead and follow your dreams. As believers, no matter what industry we are in or what we do, we are to "reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ" (Ephesians 4:13).
