Bulgaria is a country in Eastern Europe bordered by Romania to the north, Serbia to the northwest, Macedonia to the southwest, Greece to the south, and Turkey to the southeast.  It is bordered on the west by the Black Sea.

 

Facts:

  • The Capital is Sofia
  • The official language is Bulgarian
  • It’s population is approx. 7.4 million
  • 84% of the population is Bulgarian Orthodox while less than 2% of the population identifies as Christian.
  • Approximately 6.9 million people visit Bulgaria each year.

 

History:

  • By the 800’s the first Bulgarian state had formed, however it was overtaken by the Ottoman Turks from the 1500-1800’s.
  • Bulgaria regained independence 1878 with the help of Russia who assigned a German prince as ruler of the nation.
  • In 1946 after the defeat of Germany in WWII Bulgaria fell under communist rule until 1989.
