Swaziland is a country in southern Africa.  It is bordered by Mozambique to the east while the remainder of the country is bordered by South Africa.  Swaziland is an absolute monarchy, one of the last remaining in Africa.  It also unfortunately has the world’s highest HIV/AIDS infection rates (26.1% in adults and over 50% of adults in their 20s). It’s estimated that by 2050, Swaziland may cease to exist.

Facts:

  • Its capital is Mbabane
  • The official languages are Swati and English
  • The population is approx. 1.1 million
  • 83% of the population is Christian
  • Approximately 1 million people a year visit Swaziland

History:

Artifacts indicating human activity dating back to the early Stone Age 200,000 years ago have been found in Swaziland.  Prehistoric rock art paintings date from c. 25,000 BC.  Originally ruled by the British, Swaziland gained independence in 1968.
