How I Was called Into the Mission Field:

It has taken me 20 years to be able to do good unnoticed, under the radar, and still I struggle with wanting recognition. I think this is human nature. We want to be told “good job” or just know someone is aware of our work even if they don’t make a big deal out of it. We are always comparing our work to others, and hope that others compare their work to ours. We should not be concerned about such trivial things as these.

Therefore… this is not going to be about what I have done, but what God has done through me.

I believe I was called into missions spring of 2008. God was tugging at my heart with the word “orphans” and place “Guatemala”. The Texas Tech Wesley Foundation which I am a part of was going on a mission trip that May but was full and I didn’t really look into signing up. However, after I posted a blog on facebook about looking after the widows and orphans, one of the interns in charge of the trip messaged me telling me that a spot opened up and she wanted to ask me first. I signed up practically 2 months later than everyone, yet God took care of funding, and continuously showed me how important this trip would be. In May of 08, the team of 10 went to Villa Nueva (just south of Guatemala City) to the New Life Children’s Home. We worked in the mornings, played with the kids in the afternoons, and ate with them at lunch and dinner. One night some of us even got the opportunity to take the best behaved children to a skating rink in Guatemala City. This was my first international mission trip and I knew it was something I was called to do.

This past December I was called to co-lead a trip of Texas Tech Wesley students to Port Arthur, TX to help out with Hurricane IKE relief. Especially with the hurricane hitting my great state and having experience from Dec 08 in New Orleans I knew this was something I needed to do. That trip taught me the ins and outs of planning trips, and coordinating them. I also learned how to roof a house and drywall (roofing was way more fun, but its amazing the friends you make when you are doing tedious work such as drywalling).

As far as this trip goes, I don’t know where or for how long God wants me in the mission field but I’ll jump in the water and trust Him.
