There once was a man whose name was Bill Swan,
He came to Moldova to debrief my squad.
He introduced us to the phrase “living in abundance”,
We listened intently, as he’s a World Race alumnus.
He told us to share what little we possess,
And when asked for something, reply with a “yes”.
He nudged us to loosen grips on our peanut butter jars,
To stop hoarding food and emergency candy bars.
You see, if you’re not sharing, then in reality,
You’re living your life with a poverty mentality.
C Squad took Bill’s talk to heart,
We chose to give more; This was the start.
So I loosened my grips, and I said more “yes-es”,
These people are my family; I’ll do what blesses.
The concept was great and didn’t seem so tough,
But a couple months later, I may’ve had enough.
We heard this talk at the beginning of May,
I’ve since heard “live in abundance” every single day.
“What’s that you have? A cookie? Is it good?”
I’ll let you bless me and give me your food.”
“I know you desire an ‘abundance mindset’,
So I’ll help you out, and just take the rest.”
This scenario happens often, the stories are ample,
But let me share with you the most recent example.
Iced coffee is one of life’s sweetest pleasures,
If found on the World Race, each sip should be treasured.
‘Twas a travel day; I was tired and weary,
Yet, there was one treat that could make me cheery.
I found iced coffee – Yes! It was mine!
Little did I realize, that cup would serve nine.
We share food, drinks, pretty much everything. You know –
The World Race is no place for a germ-a-phobe.
So all I ask of you, Bill, is to next time consider,
Giving a talk that makes someone else the giver.
In all honesty, it’s a perspective I wish I’d had sooner,
I guess maybe Bill isn’t a total life ruiner.
