Saturday, July 25th was my 24th birthday.

As is fitting for a birthday..it was a good day. It was Saturday..which means breakfast isn’t until 8am…and I get to sleep in..yay. I woke up to my bed covered in green balloons- some of which were stuffed with items like cookies, notes, Q-tips with messages, etc. So that was fun! We had a half day of construction because it was Saturday.   After lunch my team surprised me with a Christmas in July themed party…which included all the cookies you could ask for…and an unforgettable white elephant game…imagine all the random stuff people would have on the race…from green glow sticks to stickers, cookies, suckers, an old fanta bottle affectionately named Ralph, and of course Kaleb’s passport.   And in the end I got to keep all the gifts!

Then that night there was a party. We played games, got to see traditional dancing, eat junk food, dance, and just hang out with the kids. Right before the night was over a few girls did some traditional dancing for us with long skirts that swish…then they wanted me to try it! Nervous, but with a sense of excitement they put on the dress and showed me how to dance with the skirt. I’m not a fan of dancing in front of people…especially when I have no idea what I’m doing…but it was lots of fun!  Some Nicaraguans sang “Sapo Verde to you”, literally means green frog, but sounds like happy birthday so that’s what they sing. And they sang to me for real. Then afterwards my team encouraged me with words, visions, and prayers. So yeah…it was a great day.
