After several months of anticipation I find myself in Guatemala with 32 other participants, as well as leaders and alumni who have come to help us launch and prepare for the year to come. Early Sunday (May 31st) we flew out of Boston, and after two flights and a 3 hour van ride we finally arrived. Where we’re staying this week is absolutely beautiful, next to a huge fresh water lake surrounded by mountains and a volcano or two. We’re in a turisty area, so there are many shops, souvenirs and street vendors. I’ve never had so many kids try to sell me bracelets before and the entire squad has quickly learned to say “no gracias” when being offered items left and right. Having the ability to speak in Spanish is already a tremendous blessing in communicating with locals. Its been fun to translate for teammates, although I have to admit sometimes it can be a little nerve wrecking as I am out of practice and naturally not the most assertive person.
This week is meant to prepare us for the year ahead…its been a time of seeking, praising and worshipping God, a time of teaching, and connecting with my team and learning to work together as a family. One of my favorite things about being on my team is our time for talking at the end of the night, affectionately called (w)rap session. It’s a time to tell how the day has gone, express frustrations, rejoice in what has happened, pray over and edify one another. Tuesday was rough, emotionally. I was confronted head on with fear and change but I was just so encouraged when my team laid hands on me and prayed for me that night.
