Yes it is true folks! I, dyslexic Leah Finlay, have been an English (of all subjects, of course!) professor for a month now. Do not feel bad at all if you feel for my students, I am right there with you! It’s definitely been challenging and hilarious at moments. Thank the Lord I have three co-teachers because they tend to either help me spell the words on the whiteboard or correct my spelling haha! My poor students…shoot, they still love me!
My morning begins at 6am (well, my alarm goes off at 6am). By 7:15am we are all loaded up in our 15 passenger van and headed to zone 18, Guatemala City. The drive is just under 2 hours and is quite nice for listening to music/sermons or reading… or in my case, sleeping in the aisle of the van.
Every morning at 9:30am I am tackled by a million hugs and kisses with shouts of “Lea! Lea! Señor Lea!” echoing from all my students at the little house school.
By 3:30pm I have taught five English classes in two different schools. Each class is filled with the most precious brown eyes and rotting out smiles. It’s still amazes me how that these kids who face every type of abuse and have been expose to things that I still know little about can still be kids at the end of the day. During recess they run around (never losing energy I must add) playing soccer, tag, jump rope and the girls chasing the boys away. It truly makes me sad to think of the kids back home. Where has their childhood gone? At such a young age they are already acting as though they are adults. Do not get me wrong, I am not a parent or a child psychologist but it seems to me that kids in the US are losing their childlike innocence at a younger age even though they do not face the number of challenges my students in Zone 18 take for granted.
I am a week away from my halfway point in Guatemala and I have already learned so much and grown in many ways. I cannot wait to see how much I grow in the next 7.5 months! I may be freaking out a little right now….time has truly flown by!!!! Ah! Okay, I am good now!
Well here are the pictures I have promised. I don’t have much time so there are only a few. Enjoy my precious little niños 🙂
…Just kidding! The wifi here is not stable enough to load the pictures. I will try again next week.
Have an amazing week and enjoy some Sweet Tea in honor of me! 😉 Cheers!
