While the majority of my friends are planning their dorm decor on Pinterest or signing up for Greek Life, I’m sitting on my bed making a list of survival equipment that I can effectively pack 9 months worth of in a backpack. There’s a lot, like, A LOT, going on. There are fundraisers to be planned and there are team members to meet. Somehow, graduating high school seems so minor on the scale of big events this year. You know, if I have to pick, I’m gonna say it’s runner up to moving overseas.
There’s one thing that should be made clear in all of this: I am taking a GAP YEAR because I feel like I could benefit positively from a break before college. I am going on the WORLD RACE because I feel called to spread the love of Jesus.
I would be lying if I said there haven’t been any days where I’ve just sat staring at the ceiling and wondering what in the world I signed up for. There have been (and still are – shhh don’t tell!) moments of uncertainty and times of trying to remember why I chose to do this. I’ve come up with a couple of reasons.
1. “Every saved person this side of Heaven owes the Gospel to every lost person this side of hell.” – David Platt. I saw a story about a magician who, after his show, was approached by a man who complimented his act and then proceeded to leave him with a small pocket size Bible, no long speech, just a gift. The magician, who then and still today identifies as atheist, talks about the respect he had for the man and then proceeds to say “If you really believe there is a Heaven and hell and there are lost people in the world, how much do you have to hate someone to not minister to them?” (The whole video is here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6md638smQd8) This is clearly a very bold statement but I agree with both the magician and Platt. I, as a Christian who believes in a Heaven and Hell, owe it to those who are lost to share the gospel with them in hopes that even if I cannot lead them to a change of heart, I can plant a seed.
2. “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…” – Matthew 28:19. Not only is a desire I possess, but it also written in Matthew as a command to believers to GO and make disciples of ALL nations. I agree that this verse can be interpreted differently, but at face value, there are no boundaries on where the gospel is to be shared. These people, widows, orphans – they need hope. The Great Commission calls Christians to be the source of this hope.
So no, I’m won’t be joining in late night dorm karaoke in August like my friends will. Instead I’ll be at training camp because I took the road less traveled. And that has made all the difference (Frost).
