A great Ministry!
Our ministry this month is at a senior daycare!! It has been a great experience to learn the culture and use my Spanish speaking skills. I have the most history with Spanish and it has been a great way that I can serve my team as well as the seniors. Despite my speaking abilities I lack the skills to go into a deeper conversation of God with them. The senior daycare is a Christian organization and they often pray and will bring their Bibles on occasion. It is great to see God throughout the nations! A typical day looks like:
1. Remove the water from the local city canal (A ditch) so we can plug in a water pump (outlet fully submerged) to pump water for the day. We will use this water for dishes, bathrooms and washing hands.
2. Basket weaving with palms and hourly naps are an all day occurrence. If they aren’t doing anything they fall asleep in the chair.
3. 10:00 is tea time! We have had a plantain tea and often have a leche con arroz (Hot milk and rice)
4. We then have two hours of education one for math and the other for language. It is disheartening to see the lack of education in the elderly with less than a 4th grade education but at the same time rewarding to be able to help them with math as they teach me Spanish.
5. The rest of the afternoon we just sit with them and find ways to serve them especially due to the poor standards of the daycare.
The kitchen’s back wall is covered in mold as it is rainy season until late October. Since we have been there mold has spread and been discovered on the tables we eat on as well as a small bathroom which swell with water due to a broken pipe. The roof leaks above the staircase to the open roof which has already caused an elderly lady to slip and injure herself. The cleanliness is just short of U.S. standards but is a great ministry to the elderly here.
Us gathering water from the near by ditch!
Me and 85 year old Antonio! I often get asked for photos due solely to my height!
