Ever since I was a little kid I have always enjoyed watching movies. Whenever I watched one I typically fell in love with it and tried to become the main character in the movie. All my life I have been told that this is a symptom of an identity crisis (that I don’t know who I am), and up until today I have believed that lie. Now as I sit back and watch a movie and see the protagonist push into his/her dilemma I see exactly why I always wanted to be the main character of all of these movies: They often times resemble the man of God Christ is calling me to be.
The problem is that up until now I have bought into the lie that I will never be able to overcome great defeat. I recently watched the movie, “Wolverine”, which is a prequel to the trilogy X-MEN, and I was astonished as I heard Truth being spoken over me through the movie. It was during the park when Logan (protagonist) was accepting the offer that his former commanding officer had given him. The commanding officer said, “I’m not going to lie to you. There are two things I can promise you will happen if you choose this path: You will endure more pain than any man could ever endure, but through it we can kill Victor together. We must destroy you in order to rebuild you.” – Okay the part that stuck out to me the most was that last part, “WE MUST DESTROY YOU IN ORDER TO REBUILD YOU.” This is exactly what Christ promises his followers! That if we follow Him and accept His ways He will make us a new creation, but in order to become that new creation we must die to our old selves/flesh.
This is why I always wanted to be the protagonist of all of these movies! They push into the hard things and overcome great pains to become better stronger people! They push into their own brokenness (often times it looks like training of some sorts) and they push into a greater power that allows them to grieve there past and accept who they were born to be. For too many years I have bought into the lie that I will not be able to overcome the weight of my past and push into the things God has in store for me. Now I have been given the realization of the opportunity that has been laid before me my entire life: that I am able to give my life to Christ fully so He can destroy me in order to rebuild me.
