After a week of cutting up tree limbs into firewood and a couple other, smaller tasks in Greystones, Jim took 8 of us (a mix from all three teams working with him) on a weekend road trip across the island. Let’s just say it was a lot more than any of us could’ve expected. It’s too much to type out in paragraphs, so I’m just going to list our itinerary (don’t have a whole lot of time for Internet):
Friday
-Drove to Dublin and wandered around for about an hour–met a 14 year-old girl beggar on the street and witnessed to her for a while before meeting up with the rest of the group to help a couple local church leaders do a little street preaching under the Dublin Spire.
-Jim picked us up and we drove across the island into Galway to meet up with the team posted there
-Drove around to 9 different hotels looking for vacancies without any luck, so we hunkered down in the camper van (9 people in a van made for 4)
Saturday
-Morning devotional with Jim over a grocery store and McDonald’s breakfast
-Stopped at a castle on the side of the road and also an incredible ocean view road-side shopping place to snap a few pictures
-Made our way over to the Cliffs of Moher for the afternoon and managed to find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow which happened to be reaching down the cliff and into the ocean (so appropriate that we’re in Ireland, right?)
-Drove South (I think) to a surfer town right on the beach and spent time walking around witnessing to people before dinner–met some very hungry and curious 16 year-old kids who asked some very good questions!
-Camped out on the beach with the rest of the guys while the girls got the camper to themselves
Sunday
-Morning devotional with Jim over leftovers from dinner and went back into the town to witness some more
-Drove to another town and passed out tracks for a little while before going to Dromoland Castle, built in the 1500’s and more recently turned into a 5-star resort (we had to look extra-touristy to get in)
-Hooked on the castle idea, Jim drove us down the road to Bunratty Castle, built in the first century and also got a chance to visit Durty Nelly’s (1600’s) pub and restaurant.
-Stopped at a hotel parking lot and held another devotional and a communion service where Jim also washed our feet
We got back to Greystones around 3 am Monday morning and spent most of the day back at our projects from the week before. By the afternoon, we were taken into Bray where Crash is going to spend the week working to paint the house we’re staying in while also taking a few days to visit and minister to an addiction counseling house down the road. Next week, we’ll be back in Greystones to finish up what we started there.
