I am sitting in a living room full of piles of junk, half packed boxes, and mismatched pieces of dusty furniture. Welcome to moving day.

I have packed and moved on numerous occasions, and I’ve dreaded it every time. My usual tactics mostly entail smashing everything I own, unorganized, into whatever boxes, bags, or tupperware containers I can find. Then at the new location I organized everything as it comes out of the box. Thus far it has worked out quite nicely, however I am quickly learning that this approach will not work this time.

You see, this time I am not packing my things to move to a new location. I am sorting all of my belongings into two piles: “The Keepers” and “The Givers”. The goal is to make the givers pile HUGE and keepers pile fairly minimal. Although this packing process is taking substantially longer than the “smash-in-a-box” technique, there is some variety of liberation in putting so much into the givers pile.

I’m pretty sure God’s down with this newfound packing process too, because we were hanging out last night and he was like, ” …Go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” (-Matt. 19:21)  My response was, “Good idea man! I’m gonna have a garage sale, take some stuff to the thrift store and then put the rest of my stuff in a backpack, so I’m mobile and can follow you where ever you’re going.”
