excuse the long delay on posting news, but here in Kenya well there really is a lack of internet.
Travel Days. I never realized that we would spend a lot of our days in transition between the place we came from and the place where we are going. I love traveling. I think because there is a sense of anticipation and excitement of what is to come. It doesn’t matter whether it’s for a short or long time. Some of my fondest memories have been in a car traveling. In college, it was traveling to Sonic or Starbucks to talk with a friend. When I was working it was to get a sweet tea with a friend to escape the pressures of work. I enjoy traveling because you are confined to just sit. To be present. Nothing is expected of you, you can rest because you are not there yet. You can enjoy being in the company of another.
The past couple of weeks we traveled a lot. In fact for two nights straight I slept on either a bus or a plane- lucky for me I can sleep wherever I am! I love it though, I have felt closer to my squad and we have gotten to meet so many people, including a national African soccer team.
Here is a summary of my travel days….
December 28th – We left Israel and took an overnight bus to Cairo, Egypt where we made a pit stop…
We toured the Pyramids, Sphinx, and Egyptian Museum. It was originally not a part of our plan, but I definitely did not object to this. After taking a brief tour, the bus dropped us off at the airport that night. December 30th – I woke up to our landing in Nairobi, Kenya. Exhausted from travel, the whole squad stayed in Nairobi for a couple of days while our logistics team figured out how we were getting to where we are going.
We of course celebrated the New Year like the locals do and went out dancing. I am proud to say we were the first ones on the dance floor! We started off the New Year’s with a wonderful display of fireworks and got interviewed by one of the local news station, probably one of the best New Year’s celebrations I’ve had! Happy 2010!January 1st – We listened to a presentation on African culture.
January 2nd – Rest Day
January 3rd – I spent three and a half hours getting my hair braided with my squadmate, Birkleigh. Yes, it’s true my whole head is braided…with weave…haha! Kind of felt like I got a face lift at first because the braids were so tight, but no big deal! The best part is …I don’t have to wash my hair, perfect for Africa! You will have to ask me more about this experience, we were the only white girls in the salon, but we got to witness with the ladies braiding our hair. Pretty cool.
