Just a few days ago I was sitting in the Philippines and enjoying talking to some of the boys from our street gang ministry. Today I sit in a “guest house” (hotel) listening to music from the kids at the school. In a few hours I will be over there watching them preform their Easter celebration.
This month we are working with the orphanage that is behind the school and the school. This school is a special school here. In most Cambodian school teachers take bribes (so they can afford to pay their bills) so the student who should be getting a free education are having to pay so they can get all the education. This school is special because our contact pays the teachers a reasonable wage and so forbids them from taking bribes from the students. So they have access to a really free education.
The orphanage is also really special in that the children earn their spending money. The kids have a garden and if they chose to maintain the garden they get the money to spend on what they want. Some of the kids chose to spend their money on pigs (which the orphanage will house and help pay for) and so when they leave they will have something to take with them. Most of the kids want to stay in this place because of the chance they have to have things that are theirs.
Our ministry will include teaching English in the school and orphanage, helping in the orphanage, and because this area is very spiritual dark (sexual sin, and miscommunication is the most severe) we are thinking about doing some ministry on the beach.
Please pray for us that we can bring more Kingdom in this place, that God will show up in ways unthinkable to us, and that the spiritual darkness will be lifted.
