Today.

This hour.

This minute.

This breath.

This is a moment to cherish.

Today is March 11, 2015.

Guiltily, I’ll admit that I spend too much time in tomorrow. I’m excited for what will happen this year, and next, while I am ministering to the least of these in foreign lands. I’m excited to marry my one-day husband. I’m excited to have children and grandchildren. I’m excited to see people healed. I want to see what my life will look like in 10 years, 20 years, 50 years. My focus is almost constantly on what will be instead of what is. Do you know what I am doing?

I’m cheating on today.

How rude.

In the book of Matthew, Jesus tells His disciples, “therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Matthew 6:34)

Jesus was telling His disciples to fix their focus.

I don’t think Jesus was telling His disciples that it is wrong to acknowledge that there is more out there than just today. Otherwise, why would He place eternity in our hearts? (Ecclesiastes 3:11) (Side note: that reference was 3:11 and today is March 11…..That wasn’t intentional. But if you’d like to do something intentionally amazing on this day in history, you can donate by clicking on the ‘Support Me’ tab. 😀 ) What Jesus was telling his friends was that they don’t need to stare at what hasn’t happened yet.

Did you know that each day, God gives us new mercies? (Lamentations 3:22-23)

Did you know that God gives us everything we need for today? (Psalm 23)

Did you know that Jesus is the same today as He was yesterday and as He will be forever? (Hebrews 13:8)

That same Jesus is teaching me to focus on the now. Why? Because the difference between today on tomorrow is me. I exist in today and have the ability to respond to things that happen today, not tomorrow.

I wonder what would happen if I stopped living in tomorrow and started walking in today. It might look like me taking the time to talk to that stranger in the line at the pet store when I am buying crickets for my bearded dragon. It might look like me smiling at my family instead of gluing my face to facebook. It might also look like ceasing to dream about my someday husband and start praying for him now. It might look like me getting off my tukis and finding new ways to love.

“You’re off to great places!

Today is your day!

Your Mountain is waiting, So….

Get on your way!”

Dr. Seuss

Today is special. It’s the day that the LORD has made. Let’s rejoice and move in today.
