While on my trip so far I have been blessed to have many fun adventures and new experiences. One of which was bungee jumping. I had heard of many racers going bungee jumping while they were in Nepal and I hoped to be able to have the chance to do so as well. My team was staying in the heart of Kathmandu for our first week in Nepal and our contact told us we would have Sunday off to have an adventure day. My teammate Audra and I signed our names up to bungee jump and I was eagerly looking forward to it.
When Sunday morning came and I wasn’t fully sure what I had gotten myself into. I didn’t want to eat too much beforehand so my stomach would be empty for the jump, which I thought was a safe and smart idea. Audra and I jumped on a bus early in the morning to head to the resort where we would jump. We figured we would have a short bus trip to the resort, bungee jump, have lunch and head back to our hostel to enjoy the rest of the day with our other teammates. Well, about 4 hours and one stop for tea later, we made it to the resort all safe and sound. We got off the bus and saw the bridge that we would shortly be jumping off. We had to walk across the bridge in order to get to the resort. I will be honest here; I was a bit scared to walk across that bridge for the first time. I love heights but knowing why I was there, to jump off the bridge just for fun, was a bit nerving.
Audra and I as well as about a few dozen other crazy people got our brief training for the jump and we were all weighed in order to know which group we would be in and which bungee would be used for us. I was in the first group and I was glad to be able to be one of the first to jump. All the jumpers in the first group made our way out to the bridge and waited for our weight to be announced which meant it was our turn to jump. The first girl who went was from Russia. Once she was all strapped safely in she made her way out to the edge. She kept leaning backwards and looked quite terrified. As I watched her I vowed I would not be like her. I told myself I would walk up to the edge fearlessly with no hesitation and on the instructor’s say, I would just jump. Ya, I have a bit of a stubborn side to me at times.
And so I willingly and confidently jumped, off of a bridge 160m above a river. It was one of the coolest experiences I have had. I don’t know how to describe the feeling, but it was really neat. The whole jump lasts very little time but I really enjoyed the experience, it was an experience I will never forget and I am thankful to have been able to have the opportunity to bungee jump.
Stay tuned for part 2, my favourite part of my bungee jumping day!
