with fun, relaxing, friends, pools, and beaches. This past weekend myself and
10 of my squad mates headed to Phi Phi Island (pronounced PP) for a
mini-vacation. We got there and discovered that google doesn’t lie, the images
are surprisingly accurate! Words cannot describe the beauty!
We spent the first day relaxing by the pool
and went on a snorkel and kayak tour, it was perfect. The next day we woke up
to complementary breakfast. Nothing was going to happen to make this day less
than perfect… or so we thought. When the pool opened we were there. So was Eva.
Eva is a 65 ish year old woman from Sweden.
She joined us in the pool, nothing to take notice of, until she picked up the
soccer ball.
Eva tossed the ball to Emily who was on a
pool raft. She played catch with Emily and Ashely for a minute and then, she
walked over to Emily, and flipped her. Emily stood up laughing and said, “Well
Eva, that sure takes a lot of guts to flip a perfect stranger.” For about 20
minutes it continued, she flipped both Emily and Ashley several times while
they were playing catch. The funniest part was that Eva apologized every time
she flipped them; “sorry!” she would say in her Swedish accent.
all take place, attempting to maintain my relaxing day at the pool. So when I
got on the float, I made my way to the other side of the pool in hopes of
staying out of Eva’s little game. I failed.

It started when Eva threw the ball at me;
first it hit my back, then my butt, and then my head. When it hit my head Eva
said, “sorry!” And then she flipped me. I have to admit my attitude was not
that of my fellow missionaries, I was not exactly joyous or even amused to have
this woman disturbing my vacation. Meanwhile, everyone else had vacated the
pool and I was left alone with Eva. In my mind I was thinking about my terribly
selfish attitude in this and the phrase “if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em”
occurred to me. So I did.
“Eva, would you like a turn on the
raft?”
“Oh, no,” she replied with a smile on her
face like that of a kid working up a brilliant plan.
So I ran, or swam as the case may be. With
Eva chasing me around the pool I made a quick lap around to safe ground in the
pool river that was a few inches deep and ran between the two pools. There, Eva
tried to pull me back. Luckily I escaped, at least for the moment. Meanwhile my
friends are all sitting around the pool laughing at the ridiculousness that was
going on inside the pool. Talk about leaving me hanging!
Eva flipped me one more time and apologized yet again.

“Yes yes, I am sorry.”
“Mmmmmk Eva, nice to meet you.”
in the pool and she went on to toss the ball with them. Hopefully she was
gentler with them than she was with us.
