I have to say that I have mixed feelings
about leaving S. Africa. I am excited to be moving on and to experience
Mozambique but this month has been amazing! Not only is the country beautiful
and sunny, mountainous and costal, but the ministry has been a blast! Working
with both Higher Ground and Horizon Farms has been a great blessing and a
ministry that I love. But there is a time for everything and now it is time to
say goodbye to S. Africa.

Weather – Slightly milder
than a GA summer. It is sunny and hot but it rains a good bit and when it does
it gets pretty chilly.

Cultural Food – Pup. It is kind
of like grits, just less gritty. It is made from corn mill like grits but it is
less course. At first I was a bit stand-off-ish to this dish, but once you put
butter and pepper in it is actually pretty good (but then again, what doesn’t
taste better with butter). I couldn’t decide if the texture was closer to grits
or mashed potatoes.

Common Transportation – Our contacts
family van. The 7 of us pile in the van with our 2 contacts and their baby in
her car seat. My seat is typically on the floor in front of the car seat. But
praise God it does have AC!

Housing/Bed – 4 different
locations this month. Weeks 1 and 4: camp bunk beds. Week 2: Childs bed in a
really nice house. Week 3: Some random, probably should have been thrown away a
long time ago mattresses piled on top of each other to create a twin bed. Week
4: camp twin beds with guard rails

Ministry – Higher Ground
Camps: Camps for disabled people and Horizon Farms: A sustainable farm that
provides jobs, therapy, and housing for disabled people.

Horizon Farms Residents
Team – We are growing closer every
month. This month has been good for us to grow and push each other spiritually.
We are also learning to fight for each other’s wants and needs.

Spiritual Growth – This month I
have learned a lot more about flexibility. Changing locations, diet, schedules,
and ministry every week was a good shove into learning that. Also, this month
was hard to not have internet available. Because of that in part I started to
get homesick. This really made me think about why I came on the race and what
sacrifice looks like.

Greatest Challenge – Obviously this
month was tough because it was Christmas. Missing the holidays with family and
friends was really hard. Also, this has been the first month that we have not
had regular access to internet. I wasn’t able to talk to anyone back home and
it has spurred homesickness to a new level.

Verse – “Therefore, since through God’s
mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart.”     2 Corinthians 4:1

Favorite Moment – Hearing
Margaret’s Story (click for blog)

Favorite Adventure – Climbing the
Drakensberg mountains. It was so beautiful, like a movie. We were able to hike
through the gorge and the river and have a picnic at the bottom. Fun day!

The Gorge we ate our picnic in.

Fun Fact – In Afrikaans, to
say “thank you very much” you would say: “baie dankie” which is pronounced
“buy-a-donkey.”

Now we are over half way through the race
and I it still feels so surreal. Although I am really missing home at this
point, I know that God still has a lot of work He wants to do in me and through
me and I am excited about what He has in store for Mozambique!

Many Blessings,

Kim
