Last night, I was briefly discussing with Hope Mendola (hopemendola.theworldrace.org) about how it is not only possible, but fairly easy to find something exciting to write about on the World Race daily. So, she challenged me to do what she is doing. Because I don’t want to be crazy or wear out my readers, I will write one blog every day for the last 27 days that I will be 27 years old.

To begin, I have to tell you we just traveled from Ho Chi Minh City, Vitenam by bus to Phenom Penh, Cambodia to stay at the YWAM base with the entire squad for a few days before starting our May ministry. We were all given $10 USD for food for the two days that we are here, so a big group of us went to the grocery. (By the way, Cambodia uses USD as it’s currency… I wonder if the US government is aware of this?)

It’s a funny scene when World Racers go to the grocery store. We pace back and forth from the tuna fish aisle to the cereal aisle 10 times before making a decision to just purchase the bulk-sized oatmeal and commit to eating it everyday for the rest of your life. How can you beat it? It’s only $1.65 of your budget.

I glanced to the left and my eyes locked on a box of Cheez-Itz. It was exciting, I promise. It’s the first time I’ve seen my favorite snack since I left my parents home on August 11, 2009. As I approached, I saw that the price on this tiny box is $4. I was almost brought to tears as I realized I’d have to eat them for breakfast, lunch and most of dinner in order to be able to afford it.

I left them on the shelf.

Wanting to be responsible, I leave the grocery store with 5 eggs, bread, tuna, yogurt, ramen noodles, oatmeal and bananas. More than enough food for the next two days = $5.45. I feel like a champion. Okay, so I’ve learned to be happy with small victories, but when most of the world lives on far less than this every day, I feel as if I’m being culturally relevant by spending little money on food.

I could keep going, but if you are still reading, I’d be surprised, so I’ll end with this. If  you’d like to buy me a welcome-home gift, Cheez-Itz are at the top of my food list.
