Dear Costa Rica,

It’s not even been a whole month since we met, but I love you. I realized this as I sat on one of your beautiful mountain tops overlooking the town that I have lived in for the past three and a half weeks. I sat in awe as I admired the beauty that your country has to offer. The outstretched mountains that reach high into the clouds, the warm sunshine beaming down each day, the colorful homes lined up and down the alleys, and the abundance of children laughing and playing in the streets. You are beautiful.

In the midst of the violence and crime that occurs here each and every day, your people are joyful. They welcomed us into their small one-room homes with open arms, proud of what little they have. They were gracious with us as we attempted to understand and speak their language. Yet, when we failed they were still friendly and laughed with us in our amusing effort. You are full of love.

I came here to help you, to love on you and your people, but my gain was more than my loss. You helped me more than I could have ever helped you. In our short time together you taught me so much about this life that we are graciously given to live.

You taught me what it’s like to have so little, yet to still be so joyful.

You taught me what it’s like to have people stare and kids yell “gringa” everywhere you go.

You taught me how good rice and beans can be, even after you’ve had them five days in a row.

You taught me how to do laundry with a bucket of water, some soap, and a clothes line.

You taught me that safety and being able to go outside after dark is a privilege.

You taught me how to mix concrete and lay a driveway.

You taught me that hand-gestures and one-word Spanish phrases can only get you so far.

You taught me that no matter my circumstances, I am good because of the Lord.

On top of that mountain – the sun shining down, the wind blowing furiously, and the goodness of the Spirit filling my soul – I realized what an impact you have had on my life in the short month that I got to spend with you.

You are the first of many countries that I will fall in love with this year, but you will not be forgotten.

I’m sure gonna miss you Costa Rica.

Pura vida!

Love, Kelsey
