Dancing is one way we can express ourselves. We dance because we are happy and it is fun. Some of my fondest memories of high school are going to dances. We got to dress up, buy a new dress, go out to dinner, spend time with friends, and sometimes work up the courage to dance with a crush. Moving on to college I danced at parties, mostly with loud music, flashing lights, and a drink in my hand. I danced without caring because I didn’t think anyone could see me in the dark and crowded rooms at house parties. I also knew that no one would probably remember if I was making a fool out of myself because by morning the night was mostly a blur.
Dancing can be a beautiful expression of emotion. There are times when dancing is sacred, such as a first dance at a wedding reception. Dancing can tell a story like a ballet does. Dancing can also be an expression of one’s culture and tradition and used in ceremonies. There are flash mobs, which are dances done in a large group as a public display. Most people enjoy dancing or at least watching other people dance.
I have danced around at parties and with my friends to have fun but it did not compare to dancing and praising God in worship. At training camp we danced, jumped around, and sang for Jesus. Psalm 149:3 states; “Let them praise his name with dancing and make music to him with tambourine and harp.” There is freedom in dancing for the Lord. He will not judge you and loves to see His children dancing, singing, and expressing joy in worship. We don’t have to be professional dancers to please Christ. I think God is smiling down upon His children when we express our praise to Him through dance, no matter if we think we are a good dancer or not. So dance on!!!
