Me: Some chicken feet and pig knuckles? Really? Come on, Kellen, you’re on the World Race. I thought you were trying to eat some crazy food, not stuff I can get walking down the street in the backwoods of Tennessee. Is that really the best you can do?
Me: No, no it’s not. Thanks for challenging me to step it up a notch. You’re really an inspiration to me.
Me: No problem. So what you got this time?
Me: This is a grub.
In Ecuador, it’s called mayones. And in Ecuador, it’s pretty common to put one of these on a kabob and throw it on a grill. But, in Ecuador – in a small kitchen – in Huaticocha – a few weeks ago – for a few American World Racers – this was anything but common.
When I first saw the grub my thoughts were certainly not, ‘slimy yet satisfying.’ In fact, I questioned whether I could do it. But then……
I chomped into this thinking it was gonna be like a gusher. But, thankfully, juicy goodness did not squirt into the side of my mouth. Instead, it was surprisingly hollow. And it tasted a little bit like bacon. I like bacon.
So I had a second one.
It tasted like the first grub. So I had a third one. It also had a very bacon-like flavor.
Then, I almost threw up. But, up to that point, it was pretty good. So I would suggest mayones if you’re ever in Ecuador. That is to say, I would suggest 2. Maybe just 1. But, I would suggest it never the less.
