Two days
before I left for the World Race, I chose ‘pig knuckles’
from the menu at the
Gerst Haus in Nashville. I’ve never had
pig knuckles, but I knew I would eat a lot of meals this year I’ve never had
before. Call it preparation for what is to come. The pig knuckles were
delicious by the way. I love pork.
I also love
trying new, ‘weird’ food that is only weird to us and completely normal in
other cultures. So throughout the year I’ll keep you updated on the normal food
I eat in the South American, Asian, and African countries I’m in.
Here’s the first one…
This is a chicken foot. It’s looks weird, and it’s not that great. I can’t really figure out why anybody would eat it, yet it can be found in a lot of soups. There’s been way too many occasions where I’ve been quietly eating some chicken and rice/noodle soup and a foot has
floated to the top. There’s no muscle, so you have to eat a little skin and the tendons, which have a weird texture obviously. It’s not that it’s bad – with a little hot sauce, sure – but overall I’m afraid the creepiness outweighs the amount of actual food you get.
However, perhaps the oddest part of these chicken feet is how these chickens actually found there way into our bowls. It involved a machete, a rope, and three men that needed to release a little frustration from not being able to use the machetes to hunt anacondas this month. We settled for chickens.
1 My last meal in the United States was, naturally, Chick-fil-A. I had two spicy chicken sandwiches, large fries, sweet tea, and an oreo milkshake. I used 3 packs of Chick-fil-A sauce, 2 packs of bar-b-q sauce, and 4 packs of buffalo sauce. It was approximately 5,500 calories, and it was approximately the best meal I’ve ever had. Don’t judge me.
