I spent half of my college career as a business major. I still want to go into business – it fascinates me. I love the idea of helping people and businesses be successful. And I love getting to know people; which is the only way marketing and sales work.
I’ve taken a lot of accounting classes and one thing I learned in these courses is that you need to put your money to work. One of the craziest things about money is that it can grow and grow as long as you put it to work. It takes a lot less effort to raise money than it does to raise children.
There is this thing called compounding interest and is a concept that has to be God made (this last statement is opinion). You see compounding interest means that if you invest $10 one year and receive 10% the next year you will have $11. You can spend that $1 on a candy bar and or reinvest it. If you reinvest it, the next year you at 10% interest will have $12.10. It will continue to increase each year and you just have to watch it grow!
Here’s why I think that compounding interest is something that God made:
For starters we own nothing – everything that we refer to as “mine” is on loan from God. EVERYTHING – house, car, money, talents, skills, ect. And God did not loan us stuff so that we could keep it for ourselves and live comfortably. He gave it to us to reinvest (Matt 25:15-30).
Everything we have we need to put to work to further the kingdom of God. I have more than enough money so I donate to my local church. I am good at baking which can bring people joy. I have a car that I can use to drive people places. Everything we have we need to reinvest.
God has blessed us so that we can show Him to everyone we come in contact with. God tells us to “use whatever gift [we] ha[ve] received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in various forms” (1 Peter 4:10). No matter what your gift is reinvest it in others to show God’s grace to the world.
If you are blessed with financial means then invest your money in the church or organizations that are furthering the kingdom. If you are good with finance invest your time to help others manage their finances. If you are good at music use that to help other people worship. If you are creative use it.
Reinvest what you have – there is a lady at my church who uses her sewing skills to make dresses for girls who need them around the world. God didn’t give her this talent so that she can keep it for herself; he gave it to her to reinvest in others. And she has.
Now if you remember how compounding interest works, first you invest and then you get a return. I will tell you this – whatever you invest on earth you will see a return on. It just might not be what you’re thinking it is. I dare you to smile at strangers – you’ll get lots of smiles and you’ll be happier. That is a return on investment. But I will also say this – God is not going to give you everything you want just because you invest in building up God’s kingdom. Still you will see a return.
Your bank is not on earth. You are not investing in people to get an immediate return (this is not a get rich quick scheme.) God tells us not to “store up for [our]selves treasures on earth” (Matt 6:19). Our treasure is in heaven. We will see the return on our investment when we get to heaven.
God has given us everything we have to prepare us for our eternity with him. In heaven we will see all the people our investment has reached. We will be able to tell God how we used what He gave us. Our store house in heaven will be the return on investment of everything we did on earth with what God gave us.
So reinvest because interest is compounding. Every life you touch will touch another. Everything you do will be multiplied by for God to make His glory known. Every investment you make on earth you will see a return in heaven.
Compounding interest is so simple. Whatever you invest you will see a return on. If you invest $10 at 10% interest in 10 years you will have $25.94, but if you invest $100 at 10% interest in 10 years you will have $259.37. So “remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously” (2 Corinthians 9:6).
So go out and generously invest what you have!
