Here is a story about the day I preached for my first time:
It was such a crazy day. I wrote my sermon about waiting and time. I spoke about how this earth is not our home. Heaven is our home and we are on this earth for the purposes of heaven. We often get impatient with God, but it is not our plan or our time. It is all about God’s timing and allowing him to prepare you for heaven. In that waiting period you must place your focus on God’s promise of heaven!
Well the night before I spoke about this I was in a bad mood and I woke up in a bad mood to find out that we were going to the far away church that is an hour and a half truck ride away (mind you we are sitting on the edge of a pick-up on pot hole infested cement and bumpy red dirt). I was upset because I wanted to go to the close church because I didn’t want to go anywhere. Katrina allowed me to take her Ipod to worship during the ride to get my focus straight and lift my mood since mine was dead. Worship is the best form of warfare so that is what I did and it worked. On the ride there our truck broke down so they fixed it on the side of the road and then we continued going.
Some of us going to ministry
We get to the church late where women are outside worshiping with some awesome songs in Swahili and they take us and sit us up in the front of the church looking out on the congregation (it’s weird to be seated in places of honor). We were planning on leaving the church around 12:30, but at noon we go outside for tea and I do not start preaching until 1. After the sermon they did more worship, encouragements, thanks, and all that jazz.
Bishop and I when preaching. He translated
During the offering people came up and placed money in the basket for the church and also brought us the fruit of their labor (literally). We got bags of mangoes and avocados and to my surprise a lady handed me a live hen. I was completely shocked, they laughed at my expression, and I made Wade take it because I was so surprised. We then ate lunch and finally we left.
On the way home we drove towards a storm, it was like the movie Twister. It usually rains in the afternoon so when it started lightly drizzling we pulled over and stood in a random person’s house that was eating lunch. It began pouring like normal, but then the rain got really loud hitting the tin roof. We looked closely and the rain was bouncing off the ground…it was hailing! God does wonders!!!!! That was the highlight of my day!
Waiting for people in the truck
We finally get back into the bed of the truck and drive in the light drizzle while trying to keep warm from the cold wind. The hen pooped on the pants of one of the passengers who was holding it next to me. We finally arrived home to our green shop around 5 (only 4.5 hours later than planned) and we warmed up, rested, and packed for debrief.
The End
