Hey everyone! I thought I would use this blog post to share one of the coolest insights that a friend shared with me about 7 months ago. I heard her speak about it at a women’s conference this past weekend again. It was just as awesome the second time around! Mad props and credit to Jodi Greenstreet right here. I’m so glad God revealed this to you and that you shared this. I’ll try my best to do it justice!
So we’ve all heard that rockin’ Sunday school song that illustrates the difference between only hearers of the Word (foolish man) and doers of the Word (wise man). Feel free to insert appropriate hand motions:
“The wise man built his house upon the rock (x3)
And the rains came tumbling down.
The rains came down and the floods came up (x3)
And the house on the rock stood firm.”
I’ll let you finish the rest. Reminisce those childhood memories.
Not that this cute, little song is wrong, but it doesn’t tell the whole story.
I’m guessing if you were to draw a picture of this song it would look something like this:

But if we look to Scripture, Jesus says in Luke 6, “As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who DUG DOWN DEEP and laid the foundation on rock.”
I imagine it would at first look a bit more like this…

Let’s be real. Digging through sand is HARD. It’s always falling back in and getting all over the place. Sand is getting into places you don’t want to think about. You’ll be finding it days later for sure. It’s a dirty, messy business and digging that deep doesn’t happen overnight.
You may have to go through many struggles and fight multiple hard battles in order to get down to that solid rock. There may be false bottoms and times when you just want to give up, but it’s once you hit that solid rock that God can begin to lay the foundation in your life.

God builds his sure foundation through lessons. He teaches us new things through different situations and trials that we face in our lives. Through each lesson in love, faith, trust, etc…another layer of foundation is laid.
The thing about these houses is that when you look from the surface, they both look the exact same. They both appear to be well-built houses. The true test is when the storm comes; when tragedy and hardship strike. Those who have not laid down a firm foundation on the rock will be completely wiped out, or as the song says, “the house on the sand went splat!” I’m not sure if it gets much clearer than that. The things we work so hard for won’t be able to stand firm if we don’t have Christ building our foundation first. It’s so important to start working and building now. Believe me, the storm is coming. It’s just a matter of when.
Take joy in knowing that God is preparing you and working with you to build up a firm foundation in him!
Let’s get diggity digging.
With Love,
Kayla
