Here I am! I made it to Guatemala and everything has been going great! We are staying in a small town called Xenacoj, about 40 minuetes away from the city. We are living with an amazing man named German, his wife Susie and their beautiful family. What a huge blessing they have been to us! Suzzie Cooks us 3 meals a day and honestly out does herself every single time. Everything is beyond delicious! I am so thankful for a great meal.
We have gotten many opportunities to talk to the locals, but it has personally been frustrating not being able to carry a full on conversation with them. When people try to talk to me and ask me questions, I tend to say “yes” and then I soon find myself in a situation that I wouldn’t have expected. Last night was one of those moments haha
When I was told we were going to attend a Fiesta I didn’t know what to expect. It was a party for Germans brother-in-law who just got elected to be the Mayor.. Unsure of what to expect, we all walked to the party excited for what was to come. They started playing some music, but
everyone just sat around, continuing to eat their food. Then two of the guys from my squad got up and started dancing. Soon after, many many people were up and dancing. I was hesitant on if I would dance, but then I thought to myself “I’m in Guatemala at a Fiesta! Go dance, be crazy, have fun, and make some memories!”. That is exactly what I did. As I was making my way to where everyone was dancing, an older man took my hand and asked me some question in Spanish that I couldn’t understand. The next thing I know, I’m laughing and dancing with this very interesting and drunk man. 15-20 minutes go by.. I’m still dancing and my legs were burning like crazy! He kept trying to talk to me and all I knew to say was “I don’t speak Spanish” (in Spanish ;). I think he wanted me to kiss him or something, but I’m not too sure.. I was wondering when the music would stop, but I realized it wasn’t going to. I tried to hand him off to other girls but he denied it and kept dancing with me. Finally I told him “no more” and ran away before he made me dance with him any longer.
After my great escape, I went to the roof top to watch the dancing continue. The Mayor even got his family together to “dance like the americans”. Even in small ways we are making an impact on this small town, even if it is just through dancing. This turned out to be a great, memorable and fun night to say the least. Definitely a night that I’ll never forget!
