This month has been one of my favorite months so far. It has been so much fun teaching English to both the children as well as the adults. Just this morning I found myself beaming with pride as the children were able to have conversations in English using everything that they had been taught so far. We also taught them a worship song – Lord, I Lift Your Name on High – and they love to sing it now, with hand motions and all. I am really going to miss teaching them and playing games with them every day when we leave here next week.
The adult English class started off a little interesting, with it feeling more like a quest for the students to find an American wife. But it has since gotten so much better as we now have serious learners. The students attending our adult English class are very smart. And they want to know as much about the English language as possible. When they said they wanted to learn verb tenses I showed up prepared to teach them simple past, present, and future tenses. That night I had to go home and google present perfect continuous, and past continuous, and future perfect. They have continuously challenged me to study up on all of the grammar stuff that I'm sure I learned at some point in my life. I never thought I'd spend my time here in Rwanda studying English! I am finding myself going a little overboard with the grammar too – like telling a teammate that they just used a future real conditional sentence. I love the challenge though! And the students are always so thankful for having us teach them English.
The hard part about each month is that it goes by so quickly. I have one more week here in Rwanda and then it's on to Uganda. I'm not sure yet what I will be doing in Uganda, but I am excited to start my time there with camping and rafting the Nile!!!
