The air was crisp in Swaziland on this December morning, and the sun was peeking over the hilltops. As I looked out over the lands from atop the playground in our backyard, God gave me the word, “I am but a speck of sand,” and He said to write about it. I couldn’t get the phrase out of my mind. I scribbled down some notes and wrote a few lines, but the words weren’t adequately expressing what I wanted to say. A moment of clarity came a couple of days later when I was reading Job 7: “Remember, O God, that my life is but a breath.” This verse sparked the engine, and that evening, I wrote this psalm to the Lord, a proclamation of who He has made me to be. It is with gratitude to Him for a humbling relationship and a changed life that I share these words with you.
I am but a speck of sand
Formed from Rock
Tossed, turned, refined
Emerging softer around the edges
Believing from my own life that rock can be made beautiful
I am but a mist
Formed from Rain
Comforting, refreshing, renewing
A smaller particle of the One who reigns
Reflecting God’s glory in the Kingdom
I am but a ray of sun
Formed from Fire
Warm, welcoming, inviting
A display of undying faith
Sparking life in those around me
I am but a breath
Formed from Wind
Uplifting, confident, bold
A whisper of the Voice that leads me
Nudging the world to know Him more
I am but a child
Formed from His hands
Warrior, Prophet, Bride
Born of His design
To carry out the will of the Great I am
I am but a heartbeat
Formed from Love
Strong, sound, secure
Surrendered to the rhythm of the Heart
Destined to operate for a limited time
Remember, O God, that my life is but a breath.
