My first day at our church in Matchovane, I said to them, “khanimambo!” which means “thank you!” in Changana, the local dialect. The church members thought it SO funny that I said it in their language…so it earned me a nickname. For the rest of our ministry time at the church, they called me “Khanimambo” or even “Khanimambo Katie”! I could usually tell, then, when they were talking about me, and I could ask our translator what they were saying. What fun!
I had a blast learning a song in Changana and leading the church in singing it (again, they thought it funny that I learned their language). Many thanks to Melanie who shot the singing video for me. Also, the church members laughed a lot when the three of us got up to dance with them in church…but later on they told me I danced rather well, so hey! They did this little twirly move that I had fun doing, but the video doesn’t quite capture it b/c our translator was also taking photos while videoing. oh well 🙂 Live demonstrations available beginning July 2009…
