A paragraph from today’s Jesus Calling by Sarah Young

“Worship Me Only. Idolatry has been the downfall of My people. I make no secrets about being a jealous God. Current idols are more subtle than ancient ones, because today’s false gods are often outside the field of religion. People, possessions, status, and self-aggrandizement are some of the most popular deities today.Beware of bowing down before these things. False gods never satisfy; instead they stir up lust for more and more.”

Ok so something entitled Jesus Calling that talks about worshiping God is definitely directed towards a Christian audience no doubt about it. I think an easy way to summarize this paragraph is that for Christians God is supposed to be our #1 priority. Other things will vie for our attention and it’s easy to get wrapped up in your routine.

Removing this from the Christian context a bit, it really made me think about where my priorities and attentions lie.   When you wake up in the morning, what’s the first thing you reach for? Your iPhone or a book, your journal or a cup of coffee? There’s no condemnation in any of the choices, it’s just important to know what you are devoting your time towards. As stated in the paragraph, it’s harder to realize what we are making the center of our lives now that distractions don’t come in the form of the other religion down the block. We are a fast-paced society in the 21st century. Our lives revolve around communication be it in person, telephone or some other electronic form. It makes sense that the devices with which we communicate are becoming more centric in our lives.

The issue lies in this. How many times have you been scrolling on Facebook right after you closed the app? Or maybe you just checked your email for the 1oth time today even though you get instant notifications.   We desperately long for affection and time with others but we’ve begun to latch our affections on to the devices rather than the people we communicate with.   We were designed to crave, we’ve just misdirected that craving.  On that note, I’m so excited to see you all very soon in person!!!
