You think you know…but you have no idea
Life here in LaCama has been more than interesting in all aspects. Honestly it is a lot better than I expected. We aren’t living in trees and eating bugs and whatever we hunt down in the jungle, but it is still not your typical arrangements. Although frustrating at times its has been an experience that in hindsight I know will be laughed on. Here are some everyday things that we get to experience here in LaCama.
-Roosters, turkeys and dogs in the morning, all making way too much noise 10 mins. before the alarm is supposed to go off.
-Breakfast consisting of spaghetti and salsa, tostadas and beans, eggs and hot dogs, or hot rice milk and cornflakes (which is my vomit trigger) There are usually bananas and muffins out too which is really nice.
-Quiet, sun filled mornings with the Lord. Love this!
-A not so fun trip to the “bathroom” aka the hole in the ground surrounded by a little bamboo hut with a feed sack door. There is just something about big black bugs crawling around the cement toilet seat every time you visit. Trust me though all you need is a parasite to get over the fear of sitting down ( I know gross)
-Shoveling endless piles of dirt
-Throwing endless piles of rocks, which turns into a fun game if played right
-Making rebar towers and cutting lots of wire
-Mixing endless piles of cement – we are all experts on this now. They don’t even have to tell us what to do anymore we are that awesome!
-English lessons with the men we work with, especially the words “very good”, “careful” and “snack”
-Laying the foundation for a church. It is so awesome to look at how far we have come in construction since we have arrived here. We actually get to put up walls starting on Tuesday!
-Laying the foundation spiritually for a church. Just to feed these people who are hungry for the Lord through our actions and interactions with them.
-“Preaching the gospel at all times and using words when necessary “(St. Francis of Assisi)
-Lots and lots of snacks! The community has been blessing us everyday with some great and some not so great snacks. I won’t lie when they bring the metal pot up the hill I get nervous that it is the dreaded corn drink. Yesterday they surprised us with coffee so my fear of the pot is dwindling.
-Receiving and killing chickens for lunch, which might I add is my favorite! Chicken, soup with rice, potatoes, carrots and chiote.
– Cute little toothless men who really know how to shovel cement and love the word snacks!
– Admiring God’s amazing creation in the landscape around us. The mountains are beautiful up here!
-Intense soccer matches with the men that we work with
-Jory’s farting. There should be a warning on this boy – do they travel!
– Hot showers at least every 3 days (I’m getting better) as long as you remember to turn on the secret switch
– Incredible church services with such passion in prayer and worship.
– Interesting dinner’s and the signature dish of Mac and Mayo (oh yea I ate it – you just pretend its cheese)
– Hilarious children who spend hours outside out gate enticing us to come play
– Quality time with my team mates and some awesome fiber time
– Below freezing temperatures at night – whoever said you wouldn’t need a coat in Guatemala has not experienced it at 6,000 feet!
– Awesome translated conversations with Pastor Manuel and his family
– Chasing King Solomon around the construction site
– Incredible blessings from the family and community, which range from giving up their house to chickens to taking us into town to getting us a coffee maker so we always have hot water.
