In Africa life is very different. The culture here is radically different. For an example in America we dont mention or talk about other people’s weight. It would be very disrespectful to walk up to someone in the grocery store and say, ” you are looking fat today”. But in some parts of Africa being over weight is not seen in a negative light. It means your beautiful and wealthy, with the money to eat well. So hearing that very line is often spoken. Actually nothing is left unspoken here. Here are a few funny questions and things that have been said to me while in Africa….
When you have a guest over you are suppose to slaughter a chicken, so lunch is ready. We are having chicken!
Are there mud huts in America?
What about houses made of straw? Sticks? I felt like I was a part of the 3 little pigs story as I was getting asked these questions
You look whiter today, do you get whiter when you stay in the house?
What is your dowery to marry? Do you pay 20 cows for a wife? More? Or less?
Do you know how to use a mop?
Do all white people have a small chest? Or is that just you? ( I am sure my momma got a good laugh from this one )
Do you know how to dig a hole? Let me see your hands, I don’t believe you do.
Is it legal to marry your cousin?
Is there a 2 kid limit in the USA?
Do you have ANY natural foods in the states?
Can you see the sun in the States? What about Europe?
When you start dating, do you tell your parents or keep it a secret?
Why are you not married? You are over the age of 15!
Can I take your snap ( picture ) with you today because you look whiter? I want there to be a real contrast between us.
Many more funny things were said but those where the most memorable. Here are two other great memories in Africa.
My sweet teammate, Sarah, and I were going door to door to tell people about Jesus. Putting us together is always a receipe for fun. This lady was so close to accepting Jesus but was distracted by a crying baby. So I whip out my handy dandy I pod touch and play some Nora Jones. The entire time we shared about Jesus we listened to the Nora Jones Album. Now a sweet lady in Africa loves Jesus and good music. 🙂
After I preached in Uganda I was given a very unexpected gift. The pastor spoke that the Lord has blessed my voice to go preach and spread the good news. That no questions asked God is calling me to SPEAK. She then quoted Romans 10:15 ” How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news ” She then took off my sandles and put on new ones. Which happened to match my african dress beautifully. I was really honored. Speaking as always been one my biggest fears. It is becoming clear that your biggest fear truly is your destiny.
So long Africa… You will be missed!
