Recently I just heard the term “FOMO”, in case you are like me and haven’t heard of this term before it stands for the “fear of missing out”.
Apparently people use this term a lot, but for what ever reason I just figured out what it meant. I think when I realized there is an actual saying and acronym for this fear, it was so refreshing. We have all felt it. The fear that if you make one choice, you are going to miss out on something else; something good, or fun, or exciting, or impactful, or…
the list goes on and on. We have all felt it. But the fact that there is an actual name for this feeling, is a good reminder that we ALL have moments of feeling like this.
As I am getting deeper and deeper into the preparation for the race there are many mixed emotions. I am so excited for everything that is to come in the next year and a half, but also thinking of what I will be missing out on while I go on the race is overwhelming.
As more and more of my closest friends get engaged, or as roommates are starting to plan where they should live next year together, or the jobs that fellow graduates are receiving, or as friends and cousin’s sweet bellies are growing bigger because they have precious lives growing in them… the more that life continues here, the deeper I fall into all of the feelings of missing out. The “FOMO” is real.
I knew going into the race that life would continue to move on here, but now that the time is coming and real life is happening, I feel conflicted. I don’t want to miss my best friends wedding, or my dear friend’s baby being born, or the memories of figuring out post grad life with my best friends. The more I think about it the more I already feel left out.
But here’s the thing… when we are following Jesus, WE MISS NOTHING.
Psalm 16 assures us that there is no good apart from The Lord and in His presence there is fullness of joy. That when we are following in His plan then there is no way we will miss out on anything. The only time I would be missing out is if I was choosing a plan for my life apart from the one the one that the Lord was calling me too.
That being said, whether you are a current racer, a future racer, someone that knows me well, or someone that stumbled across this blog by chance; my encouragement to all of you is to pursue the Lord with your whole heart. The feeling of missing out is a real and valid feeling no matter what stage of life you’re in, and no matter what journey you’re on.
Cling to the Lord, because when you are with Him, that is where life happens and there is fullness of joy. Praise the Lord. Hallelujah. Amen. We are sons and daughters of the King, and we will never miss out when we are walking with the Lord. Furthermore, being in Christ we are able to walk past the pleasures of life and to walk into eternity and we have confidence that what awaits us next is far greater than anything we could experience here. The Lord is good, the Lord is faithful, and He is evermore at work, and I am so honored that I get to take part in that work.
As always, thanks for letting my thought’s be a part of your day,
~Katie
