I was going on 30 hours of no sleep. Normally if I needed help I would sit there and silently pray to God. But this time I was desperate. I did not know what to do. I am down on my hands and knees sobbing. Crying to God for help. I was exhausted and saw no sleep in sight. Sarah was in the hospital and we had no cell phones to contact each other. The hospital would not give me a number to call her. I was in a very expensive hotel and needed to move. I had no contact information on my leaders. The airlines would not let me re-book our flight for a later date. I was stuck. I did not know what to do first. I lay on my bed and cried as I fell in and out of sleep for about 1 hour. When I awoke I went to buy a phone card and called my Mom who recruited my sister to help me find a number for someone that could help me from AIM. I went down to the hotel desk and asked if I could use a computer. They said, for 1 hour it is 40 Hong Kong dollars. I just needed it for 5 minutes though! Tears started rolling down my face again and I started rambling through my tears. My friend is in the hospital, I can not contact her, I can not get a flight booked for us, I have not slept in 30 hours, and I need to find a number to call someone to help me! The desk mans eyes got huge and I think I kinda scared him. But he had mercy on me and allowed me to use a computer for free for as long as I needed to. I found Seth Barnes number through the web and called him. Once I got a hold of him and explained my situation he re-assured me that he would help us.
I wanted to explain all my struggles to you to show you how much God answered my desperate cries. A man named David Sutherland whom Seth contacted called me a couple hours after talking to Seth. He told me who he was and asked me which hospital Sarah was at. He knew some physicians at the hospital and told me that she would be taken care of. Him and his daughter met me at the hospital that evening and he gave Sarah and I both cell phones. This way she and I could talk whenever we wanted. The next day his daughter Corrie came to get me at the hotel and she moved me into their house. Sarah came home that day from the hospital and they picked both of us up at the train station. Sarah was still very weak so we stayed at the house while the Sutherland family went to a Christmas Eve party. But before they left they had dinner on the counter for us. We ate turkey, stuffing, yams, potatoes and green beans. The best meal we have eaten all year. This morning when we woke up it was Christmas day. Sarah and I planned on going to a coffee shop for the morning to give them family time. When I went to tell Mrs. Sutherland our plan she refused to let us go. She insisted that we stay with them. We ate breakfast with the family and it was delicious. After breakfast we all sat around the tree and opened gifts. To our surprise we were showered with presents. I have never been so touched in my life. We were two strangers to them. They took us into their house and treated us like family. I sit here and think to myself, God why are you so good to me? My desperate cries to a faithful God were answered.
Romans 5:3-5
We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.
