Mary is about 40 years old and the mother of three beautiful children. Many years ago, her parents left India and settled in Malaysia, where they became workers on a rubber plantation. Mary later married a man who was also the child of migrant workers, and settled on the plantation herself. But her weak knees have made her a prisoner of her small home; Night and day she slowly moves from room to room in great pain. Her weak knees have caused her calf muscles to be under developed, her feet to turn in, and her body to be overweight due to lack of exercise.

I met Mary just over a week ago. She slowly walked into the room and offered us a seat on her couch. After greeting us, she proceeded to sit on the floor. When we tried to offer her our seats, she refused; The ground was actually more comfortable for her disabled body. After some small talk about her family, we jumped into the Gospel.

Mary had heard the Gospel before; This wasn’t the first house visit she had received. So this time, we shared the story of the lady with constant bleeding. We told her that the woman was healed because of her faith and that if she too had faith, Jesus could do a miracle. Mary told us that she did have faith and that she wanted to receive Jesus and be His follower.

Hindus have many gods. As my pastor would put it, they have 10 plus one, and Jesus is the extra one. So as you can imagine, it can be difficult to share the Gospel because many will accept, but few will except Him as the only one.

After Mary told us that she was wanted to accept Jesus, we told her that in order to be a true follower, she must follow only One. Mary said that she needed to think about it. Some of my teammates and I told her that we would pray for her, and that when Jesus heals her, she will know that He is the One and Only.

We gathered around her on the floor and prayed. When we finished, we shared some more of the Gospel. Then we prayed some more, and so on. We went back and forth, sharing and praying three times. The last time we prayed, tears flowed down her face. The Holy Spirit was thick in the room, and I could feel Him healing her. After we said Amen, we asked her to walk.

Mary slowly stood up, and as she did, her face became white and her eyes widened. The look of awe on her face told me that Jesus has in fact healed her. She walked round the room, speechless. Back and forth, back and forth. With each step she took, more faith filled her heart. As she continued walking, we prayed that more healing and faith would enter her body.

She told us that the pain was completely gone. She sat down and stood up, testing her ability to move, seeing if the pain was going to return. And everything she did proved Jesus to be true. Her slow hobble, changed into a walk. Her sorrow filled eyes, changed into eyes of wonderment. And her skeptical husband sitting in the corner, watched as his wife was actually moving pain-free.  After such an amazing moment, we asked her if she was now willing to believe in only Jesus… And she said that she still needed to think about it.

Part of my heart sank, and part of my heart had hope. The part that sank, recognized that humans have free will and have the choice to believe or not. The part that had hope, saw how God reveals Himself to all, even when some chose to be ruled by their flesh.

We prayed over Mary again, asking God to give her dreams of revelation. And the next week when we returned, Mary told us of her dreams.

To be continued…
