What do you know about Albania? Not much? Well, me either… Before I got here anyways. Albania is an Eastern European country near Greece and Italy. The population is 70% Muslim, but mostly by heritage, not real faith. Here’s how the story goes:
Long ago, Paul came here on one of his missionary journeys, bringing the Good News with him. He preached the truth of Jesus to the Albanians and they believed. In doing so, Albania became a Christian nation.
But in the 15th century, the Ottoman empire took over the country, enforcing the citizens to become Muslim. If people did not covert to Islam they would be put to death or forced to pay a large tax. So many died and others were Muslim on paper. Five hundred years later, Albania claims to be a Muslim nation.
Thankfully, Albania is an open country. This makes it very easy for us to come here and share the Gospel. There is also much fruit here… The harvest is ready. People are more than willing to talk to us and frequently ask us to get coffee with them. This makes our ministry here easy.
This month we are working with Campus Crusade for Christ, an organization that works on high school and college campuses. We are selling a Christian magazine on the university campus which contains the gospel. This has been a great way to meet people and initiate conversation.
We are only a day and a half into ministry, but I already LOVE it. Working with children for 3 months was great, but I really have a heart for women my age. We are delicate creatures and I enjoy encouraging other women.
A few great things about Albania:
- The cappuccinos- They are only $1.20 and they are delicious.
- The cool, crisp morning air- It is a bit chilly here, bit the mornings feel and smell like winter at home.
- The friendly people- People are very helpful and many speak English so this makes it easier for us.
- The missed communication- Here’s a funny conversation between the thrift store worker and a my friend Ashley while she was tryin on a coat:
Ashley: “Do I look Albanian?! Do I fit in!?”
Ernie: “Eh yes… You fit in, but uh, it is a little tight.”
*Side note: Ernie later gave me his number and told me to PLEASE call him. My teammates are begging me to flirt with him so that they can get free coats…
Ain’t gonna happen.
