PUNK’D

On the race, it is customary to talk about anything we want because generally no one around can understand us. This is quite convenient when you are on an all girls team. Here’s why: There are usually no guys around, and when there are, they can’t understand you. This makes it perfectly acceptable to talk (in great detail) about bathroom horrors, farts and poops, and of course Aunt Flow.

Today, we were having lunch at a church members house, as we do almost everyday. We were served rice, potatoes, and a yellow chicken sauce, which was quite delicious. As we got comfortable with our surroundings, we began our girl talk. Lauren (AKA Dory)  was talking about how she is known for brushing her friends’ teeth for them. Ashley and Amanda were talking about how they were going to be starting their “time of the month” soon, and I was probably talking about using the bathroom… I think the word hernia was thrown out there at some point.

As we are talking, confident that no one at the table spoke English, a girl across from me was giggling every one in a while. I kept looking at her, and she kept looking away. Eventually, when I mentioned a “girl product”, she busted out laughing. I turned bright red and said, “Do you speak English”. And she responded, “Yes I do, a little. I studied in school for 2 years”. We then proceeded to carry on a full conversation in English… Oh and her boyfriend understood too… He was just too shy to speak.

I don’t remember everything we talked about, but I learned a very valuable lesson today: Even when you think no one can understand you, DON’T assume this is the case. Always ask if any one present speaks English… Then you can have all the girl talk you want!
