In society today, most people try to cover their scars. People spend an unreal amount of money on creams to make them disappear, and makeup to cover them. Beautiful, is to be flawless, and untouched.

How do scars come about? Usually from taking a risk. Maybe going on a new hike, falling and BAM, ya got a scar. Maybe from unfortunate events that have happened to you, maybe a car accident? Or maybe your scars are ones that you gave to yourself, maybe scars of self-harm?

Whatever the case may be, there is usually a story behind a scar. A story of bravery, a story of tragedy, a story of pain.

Your scars were first a wound, then after some good TLC and healing, they became just external markings. Scars hold a story of victory and triumph.

So why do we try so hard to hide them? Shouldn’t beauty be overcoming?

But not only to do we try to hide our outward scars, but I would say our inward scars much more. Culturally in America, to be vulnerable is to be weak. We hold the mentality of “I got me”, and can’t fathom to ever let anyone get too close, or see the depths of your soul, in the fear of rejection. And to let someone see your scars, your weaknesses, or even your victories is unheard of. I know this first hand.

But your scars hold stories that this world needs to hear. Your story CAN change the lives of so many. Your scars, and your story hold so much power, and need to be shared!

My strong, inspiring, and God-centered mentor named Toni wrote these words:

Jesus is not ashamed of His scars

He wears them for you and me

We are not defined by our scars

By His we have been set free from the power of sin –

our unbelief the way we agree with lies of the enemy

who told us we were chained to the same frame of thinking we’d be forever in shame

The truth is we were never turned away by the One in Who’s image we’re made

We’ve forever been named  Redeemed, Made Whole, Set Free

The Beloved,Righteous

Made in His Image

Born of His Love

Born From Above

If Jesus isn’t ashamed of His scars, why are we? Scars are just proof that you are alive, they are bound to happen, and instead of hiding them, why don’t we embrace them? It’s time to show this world that WE ARE OVERCOMERS! Every story includes its own unique scars. Every story deserves to be told. So, friends, never underestimate your scars, and the stories they will tell.
